Connecting vs. transferring your domain — and what to do if you don't control it

Connecting a domain (DNS) is not the same as transferring it (ownership). Here's the difference, plus what to do if a former broker owns it or you can't log in.

To put your Roomvu site on your own domain, you only need to connect it — you do not need to transfer it to Roomvu. These are two different things, and mixing them up is the most common source of confusion.

What it changes

Where the domain points (DNS records)

Who owns/bills the domain (the registrar)

Roomvu never asks you to transfer your domain. You keep it where it is and simply add two records so it points to your Roomvu site. See How to Connect Your Domain to Roomvu.

A former broker or brokerage owns my domain

If your domain is registered under a brokerage or a broker you've left, you may not be able to change its DNS — only whoever controls the registrar account can. You have two options:

  • Ask them to release it. Request that they either add the two records for you, or transfer the domain into your own registrar account so it's yours going forward.

  • Start fresh. If getting it back isn't realistic, register a new domain in your own name — often the cleaner long-term move since it's fully under your control. See How to Buy a Domain Under Your Own Name.

I can't log into my domain provider

You'll need registrar access to add the records. If you're locked out:

  • Use the provider's account recovery — usually "Forgot password" against the email on file. If Google Domains was your registrar, your domain is now at Squarespace; use their transferred-account recovery.

  • Not sure who your provider even is? Look up your domain on a free WHOIS lookup (e.g. who.is) — it names the registrar.

  • If you truly can't regain access and can't recover the account, registering a fresh domain in your own name is the fastest path to a live site.
